What is Beet Juice

Raw beet juice is healthy vegetable juice made from fresh beets (beetroot). This beet drink has an early and mildly sweet taste, great on its own or in juice blends (for example, with green apples and carrots). As for the many benefits of beets, keep reading below.

Is Beet Juice Good for You

Short answer? Yes. Long answer? There are certainly plenty of beet juice benefits, including:

  • Beet root juice is a natural detoxer and supports liver health, as “betaine” prevents excess fatty deposits in the liver.
  • It contains vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, selenium, folate, potassium, and vitamin C.
  • Vitamin C is an incredible antioxidant that helps boost the immune system, is anti-inflammatory, and increases iron absorption and wound healing. It’s also great for skin health.
  • Vitamin C & Zinc boosts the immune system during cold/flu season.
  • Beet juice can lower blood pressure. The nitrates in the juice “relax” blood vessels and improve blood flow for improved heart health.
  • Nitrates also increase exercise stamina/levels and boost physical performance.
  • Beets contain betalains (which give them their color) and are antioxidants with anti-cancerous properties.

How to Clean Beets

As beets are root vegetables, they’re likely to have dirt over them, so washing them well is necessary. Simply fill a bowl with water and brush away any dirt with a vegetable brush. Then rinse them well, and voila!

How to Make Beet Juice

Learn how to make beetroot juice quickly and easily with this beetroot juice recipe using one of two methods. Use a juicer or blender for this beets juice recipe.

Juicer method

Following a beet juice juicer recipe makes the process practically effortless, and the detox beet juice is ready in just minutes.

  1. First, wash the beets well and chop them into 4-8 pieces, depending on their size (small enough to fit your juicer chute).
  2. Then, feed the beets through the juicer chute and let the machine do all the work.

Blender Method

If you don’t have a juicer, making beet juice in a blender is the next best thing and requires four simple steps. Just note that it does add a little water to the recipe, so the juice is diluted slightly compared to the juicer method.

  1. First, chop the beets down into several pieces (4 or 8, depending on their size).
  2. Then transfer them to the blender with a 1/4-1/3 cup of water (use the smallest amount first and increase if needed).
  3. Blend the beets and water until smooth and juicy.
  4. Then, transfer the mixture to a nut milk bag or fine mesh strainer layered with cheesecloth to strain the juice from the pulp.

Note that the juice STAINS, so use materials you don’t mind staining permanently.

Can I squeeze beet juice by hand? If you shred the beets finely and place them in a nut milk bag, you could technically try to squeeze out all the juice (wearing gloves!), though this is a high effort, low yield method of juicing beets.

When to Drink Beetroot Juice?

As with any juice you consume for health reasons, I recommend drinking it on an empty stomach in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast. This will help it absorb quickly into your system.

As well as enjoying this beet juice alone or as part of other fruit and veggie juice blends, this beetroot juice will also work as a natural colorant for drinks (cocktails, mocktails, soda), jelly, popsicles, baked goods (like muffins and quick breads), and more!

How Long Does Homemade Beet Juice Last?

I recommend consuming homemade beet juice immediately for maximum nutrients and freshness. However, any leftovers will store in a covered bottle/jar in the fridge for a further 1-2 days.

You can freeze the beets detox juice for 3 months in Ziplock bags, freezer-safe jars, or ice cube trays (depending on the material, expect to stain), depending on the portion sizes. Allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying.

FAQs

Do you need to peel beets for juicing?

No, the peel will juice easily, too. Just scrub and rinse them well.

Can you drink this homemade beet juice every day?

Yes. However, I recommend checking with a medical professional whenever you plan to introduce large quantities of something into your diet suddenly.

Can you eat beet greens and what to do with them?

There are several ways to enjoy beet greens, including tossing them raw into salads, adding them to smoothies, sautéing them, or even making chips using the same method for kale chips.

Can you juice beet leaves?

Yes, just feed them through the juicer chute as you would any ingredient.

What to do with the leftover beetroot pulp?

I like to allow the juice pulp to dry or dehydrate (at room temperature if you live in a warm, dry climate or in a dehydrator). Once dry, grind the dried leftover pulp into a powder using a high-speed blender or coffee/spice grinder. You can then use the beetroot powder within smoothies, baked goods (like cookies, quick bread, pizza, etc.), to color things, etc.
Alternatively, add the beet pulp to your next smoothie for extra fiber, or mix it into vegan burgers. You can also compost it.

How to make beet juice with or without a juicer. This sweet and earthy beetroot juice is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to help your body detox and provide much-needed nutrients! Several flavored beet juice blends included.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 3

Ingredients

  • 2.5 lb beet

This will yield about 1 pint/600 ml of juice when using a juicer

    Instructions

    Juicer method

    • Wash the beets well and chop them into 4-8 pieces, depending on their size (small enough to fit your juicer chute).
    • Feed the beets through the juicer chute and let the machine do all the work.

    Blender Method

    • Wash the beets well. Chop them down into several pieces (4 or 8, depending on their size).
    • Transfer them to the blender with a 1/4-1/3 cup of water (use the smallest amount first and increase if needed).

    • Transfer the mixture to a nut milk bag or fine mesh strainer layered with cheesecloth to strain the juice from the pulp.
Note that beet juice STAINS, so use materials you don’t mind staining permanently.

    Storage Instructions

    • Store: I recommend consuming homemade beet juice immediately for maximum nutrients and freshness. However, any leftovers will store in a covered bottle/ jar in the fridge for a further 1-2 days.
Freeze: You can freeze the beets detox juice for 3 months in Ziplock bags, freezer-safe jars, or ice cube trays (depending on the material, expect staining), depending on the portion sizes. Allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying.

    Notes

    • Wash everything immediately: Beets stain, so I recommend rinsing out your blender/juicer immediately after making this beet juice recipe to avoid staining.
    • Use organic when possible: If you plan to consume lots of fresh juice, I highly recommend using organic produce to decrease the amount of chemicals and harmful pesticides you consume.
    • Use red or yellow beets: I prefer the flavor and color of red, but either will work.
    • Don’t discard the greens: You can juice them too or use them in other recipes (refer to the FAQs on the blog).
Can I squeeze beet juice by hand? If you shred the beets finely and place them in a nut milk bag, you could technically try to squeeze out all the juice (wearing gloves!), though this is a high effort, low yield method of juicing beets, though.
How to clean beets? As beets are root vegetables, they’re likely to have dirt over them, so washing them well is necessary. Fill a bowl with water and brush away any dirt with a vegetable brush. Then rinse them well, and voila!
What to add to beet juice? Alone, this juice can taste overwhelmingly earthy, which is why I love using it to create various beet juice recipes, such as:
    • Beet ginger juice with lemon: For every 5 beets, use around 50g ginger root (or 1 tablespoon ginger powder) and the juice from one lemon (or lime).
    • For a sweeter juice, you could add either apple juice (around 1 apple per 2 beets) or orange juice to the blend. These will also help mask the earthy beet flavor.
    • Carrots: Carrot juice is naturally sweet and super refreshing to help dilute the raw beet juice.
    • Cucumbers: Cucumber juice does a similar job to carrot juice, minus the sweetness. Either can be added to beet juice drinks for extra refreshment and mild dilution.
    • Leafy greens: To provide an iron boost and more antioxidants.
    • Celery: Works well with apple or another sweetening ingredient.
    • Strawberries: Strawberry juice is wonderfully sweet and delicious.
    • Mint: Fresh mint leaves are a favorite addition of mine to fruit & vegetable juice blends like this beetroot juice recipe.

It would be best to consult with a medical professional. The nutritional information is for a serving of 200 ml (over 3/4 cup). Maybe it’s OK to drink less (1/2 or 1/4 cup) but it’s best to check with your doctor.
