Kale Benefits in Smoothies

When preparing a blueberry kale smoothie, you’re reaping several benefits. First, kale is a natural ingredient that is an excellent source of Vitamin A, folate, and omega-3 fatty acids that support brain health. It is also antioxidant-rich so it helps the body fight free radicals.

In addition to these benefits, kale is a good source of fiber. This means that it can help regulate your bowel movements, making you less constipated and bloated than before. The best part about it is that you can’t taste it. When added to this blueberry kale morning smoothie, the other ingredients overpower the flavor.

The Blueberry Kale Smoothie Ingredients

  • Frozen blueberries: It’s best to use the blueberries while they’re frozen so that your smoothie is already super cold. You won’t even need to add ice to your blender if your blueberries are frozen.
  • Kale: I love using curly green kale. You can also use red kale (aka Russian kale) or any other variety. Spinach is a great substitute if you don’t have any kale at hand.
  • Natural yogurt: I love using homemade natural yogurt. If you buy your yogurt, make sure to get un-flavored with no sugar.
  • Banana: The addition of bananas in this smoothie will make it a bit thicker so that it’s even more enjoyable. If preferred, you can add a frozen banana.
  • Coconut water: Rather than using regular water, you can bring more flavor to this smoothie by replacing it with some coconut water.
  • Vanilla extract: Although optional, a dash of vanilla extract pairs well with all the other ingredients.

If you don’t like coconut water, you can use water, almond milk, oat milk, or even coconut milk. Or a splash of orange juice to prepare this blueberry kale smoothie.

Optional Add-ins and Variations

  • Peanut butter: While you prepare this kale blueberry smoothie, you have the option of adding a bit of peanut butter. It’s a source of high protein and it has a great taste.
  • Chocolate drizzle: If you’re a chocolate lover, consider adding a slight chocolate drizzle to the rest of your ingredients in the blender.
  • Extra fruit: Don’t hesitate to add extra fruit to this smoothie. You can add diced kiwi fruit, raspberries, and even strawberries into the mixture.
  • Oats or chia seeds: You can add rolled oats, oat flour, or chia seeds to the blueberry kale smoothie recipe. They will keep you fuller for longer as well as bring other health benefits. If needed, make sure the oats are gluten-free.

FAQs

What is the best kale to use in smoothies?

The best type of Kale to use in smoothies like this blueberry kale smoothie is Russian Kale. It has a light flavor and offers the vitamins and nutrients you want and need. I also like using green curly kale.

The best way to make the kale completely smooth is to continue blending. You can add the kale first and blend it with a bit of liquid before blending it with the rest of the ingredients.

Can you put cooked kale in a smoothie?

Absolutely. If you have some steamed kale, you have the option of adding it to your smoothie.

What can I do with an abundance of kale?

If you have an abundance of kale, you can add a bit to your daily smoothies. You can also blanch the kale leaves, then freeze them for longer storage. These frozen kale leaves are a fantastic alternative to frozen fruit for keeping smoothies cold.
Besides “hiding” it in smoothies to take advantage of its health benefits, you can also use kale in other great recipes. You can make kale chips, use kale in salads and add it to soups.

Can I put kale stems in smoothies?

I don’t recommend using the kale stems in smoothies because they will end up with a bitter taste. However, if you don’t have time to remove them, you can choose to use baby kale – then you can use all of the leaves.
