This golden frappuccino is a golden milk latte with a twist. Combining the healthful properties of turmeric and ginger with the refreshing, creamy flavors of a Starbucks frappe – this is a healthy yet delicious summer drink! Plus it is dairy-free, and can be made sugar-free, paleo, keto and vegan!
As delicious as golden latte and golden milk (aka haldi doodh) are, when the summer sun comes visiting, then I want something sweet and icy. That’s where this golden frappuccino comes to play.
Rather than the traditional golden warm drink, this golden frap combines coconut milk, golden milk powder, a sweetener, ice, and topped off with some optional whipped coconut cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or star anise.
The result is a cool, creamy, and icy dessert-like drink that is far healthier than any of your local coffee-shop options. Plus, this recipe is also fairly customizable, with several ingredient swaps and options.
Oh, and if you happened to stumble onto this post and aren’t really sure what this ‘golden’ business is all about, and why it’s so healthy, then check out my golden milk post (turmeric milk recipe) for more information. Here’s a quick summary of some of turmeric top benefits, though.
Turmeric is able to increase the antioxidant capacity of our bodies, has anti-cancer properties, is beneficial to heart and brain health. Plus, it can also help to regulate blood pressure, has anti-inflammatory properties, and can even reduce symptoms of depression!
The Ingredients And Variations
The Milk: Coconut milk is my favorite golden milk go-to. However, you can use any dairy-free milk (i.e. unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, etc) or even dairy milk, if preferred.
Golden Milk Powder: This combines all the flavors and spices needed for your golden beverage (turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, ground black pepper, and cardamom) and can be used to make hot and cold golden milk beverages. You can also use golden paste, if preferred.
The Sweetener: I love to use honey. However, if you’re wanting to keep the beverage vegan then you can use maple syrup. For a sugar-free version then you can use a sweetener like erythritol.
Ice: For the slushy, frappe consistency. You can use plain ice or freeze your milk of choice into ice-cubes – that way the drink won’t become watered down as it melts.
The toppings (optional): I used whipped coconut cream to top (you can use normal whipped cream if using dairy). I also like to sometimes sprinkle with some ground cinnamon or star anise.
The Method
Making this golden frappuccino is super simple and takes just a minute.
Simply add all of the ingredients (except the toppings) to your high speed blender and blend until thick and smooth.
Pour into a glass and optionally, top with some coconut whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon/star anise powder.
Recipe Notes and Add-ins
- You can add some vanilla extract for additional flavor in the golden frappuccino.
- This drink is best served and consumed immediately, as it will become watered down as it melts.
- You could also freeze the milk of your choice into ice-cubes and omit the plain ice cubes entirely.
- Alternatively, add all the ingredients (except the ice and toppings) into the blender and then pour over ice for an iced golden milk latte.
- Warm golden drinks often contain a little coconut oil, to help the curcumin in the turmeric be easily absorbed by our bodies. That oil would solidify in this iced drink though. That is why I like to use coconut milk and coconut whipped cream topping – as it is a higher fat option, to help the turmeric bind.
- For a paleo or Keto version of this drink then simply stick to paleo/keto friendly milk options and sweetener (erythritol).
- Certain coffee shops (like Starbucks) use xanthan gum in their frappuccino drinks, to help bind the milk and ice. This leads to a smoother, pourable consistency. However, I avoid gums, and so this is slightly less ‘smooth’ but still delicious. I love drinking mine with a straw.
- For a sweeter treat, you could drizzle this drink with some turmeric honey.
- Feel free to add a little coffee (brewed or instant), for an iced coffee drink.
