A French fry being dipped in fry sauce

Whoever decided to bring together ketchup and mayonnaise into one easy dipping sauce is, frankly, a genius. Fry sauce is perfect for dipping and also makes a delicious alternative sauce for adding to hamburgers, sandwiches, and wraps for extra creaminess and flavor.

What is fry sauce?

Most commonly served with fries, fry sauce originated in Utah and was found in recipe books as far back as 1900. Combing a mixture of ketchup and mayo, my recipe uses a few extra spices for flavor and to help bring out the beautiful peach color of the sauce. You’ll find it most commonly at barbecue restaurants, diners and fast food places – but it’s super easy to make at home.

Ingredients

Ingredients for french fry dipping sauce
  • Mayonnaise: You can use regular or vegan mayonnaise – I like to use homemade.
  • Ketchup: Use your favorite brand of ketchup, low-sodium if wanted.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This adds a tangy, umami depth – you can use soy sauce or tamari for a vegan alternative.
  • Pickle Juice
  • Garlic Powder: To taste.
  • Cayenne Powder
  • Smoked Paprika

How to make fry sauce

Combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne, paprika, and garlic powder in a small bowl and mix the french fry sauce well. Taste and adjust the level of seasoning if desired.

If you have time, I recommend preparing this at least an hour or two in advance. This gives the ingredients time to meld and become a cohesive flavor.

How to serve fry sauce dip

Traditionally, it’s best served with fries, so pair it with classic French fries, sweet potato fries onion rings, or even zucchini fries. Or, swap it out for other sauces. Try it with burgers, swapped out for Thousand Island dressing in an authentic Reuben sandwich or grilled cheese. Or drizzle the easy dipping sauce over a mushroom shawarma wrap for a delicious vegan lunch option.
