What is Big Mac sauce

Big Mac sauce is the secret sauce that McDonald’s restaurants use for Big Mac burgers. It combines sweet, savory, and tangy ingredients—mayonnaise, yellow mustard, relish, onion, vinegar, paprika, onion, and garlic powder.

The mix of these ingredients creates the perfect condiment to enhance the flavor of the burger for that unforgettable, delicious mouthfeel.

Ingredients

Ingredients for homemade Big Mac sauce.
  • Mayonnaise: The base for the sauce; it provides a creamy texture.
  • Sweet pickle relish: Add a bit of crunchy texture and sweet-sour flavor.
  • Yellow Mustard: Adds a hint of spice and tanginess.
  • Onion: Very finely minced, it adds a slightly pungent flavor to the mix.
  • White vinegar: An acidic flavor to balance the richness of the mayonnaise.
  • Spices: Paprika (for color and mild spice), garlic powder, and onion powder.

See the printable recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

How to make Big Mac sauce

First, prepare the onion. You can use a knife and dice finely (see more tips on how to mince onion) or you can use a graper or a microplane and grate the onion. The finer it is minced, the better.

Then, measure the rest of the ingredients and combine them all in a small bowl (or directly in a glass container). Whisk well to incorporate until the sauce is smooth and creamy.

Next, taste-test the sauce, and if wanted, adjust any of the ingredients to your liking.

Finally, transfer the Big Mac sauce to a jar or an airtight glass container and place in the fridge for at least 30-60 minutes before serving. During this time, the ingredients will meld together, resulting in the best flavor.

Ideas to use Big Mac sauce

This Bic Mac sauce is so versatile. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

A chicken tender dipped into homemade Big Mac sauce.

How to store

  • In the fridge: Keep the sauce in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Also, stir before using.
  • Make ahead: The sauce tastes even better after the flavors have had time to meld. So you can prepare it one or two days in advance and keep it in the fridge until ready to serve.
