The best homemade Alfredo sauce is creamy, silky, and super flavorful! This easy-to-make sauce is perfect for any pasta—your next pasta night is sorted!

A spoon dripping homemade alfredo sauce over a large pan.

Alfredo sauce is a classic sauce and one of my favorites to have with pasta, right up there with my simple garlic lemon pasta recipe. It is a simple creamy white sauce made with butter, heavy creamy, freshly grated parmesan, and seasoned to perfection with garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

With a few simple ingredients, it is perfect for a quick yet indulgent weeknight meal. It takes less time to make than boiling the pasta! Plus, making it at home from scratch gives you such silky and creamy results, so much better than the bottled version.

It’s perfect to combine with my easy homemade pappardelle pasta. And if you are in the mood for an even more satisfying dish, you might enjoy chicken alfredo or shrimp alfredo—the same great sauce with added delicious protein!

Ingredients

A photo of the ingredients for Alfredo sauce.
  • Parmesan: It’s best to use a block of parmesan cheese that you grate yourself at home instead of using pre-shredded cheese—this will ensure the best, melty results.
  • Butter: Use unsalted butter. It’s best to take it out of the fridge 20-30 minutes in advance so it comes to room temperature.
  • Heavy cream. As well, let it come to room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
  • Garlic: For an aromatic flavor.
  • Spices: Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. You can make homemade Italian seasoning with dried oregano, basil, thyme, marjoram, sage, and parsley. You can also use just one or a combination of these dried herbs.

How to make Alfredo sauce

Start by mincing the garlic cloves and grating the parmesan cheese.

Then, add the butter and the cream to a large skillet over low heat. Simmer them for a couple of minutes. This will allow them to warm up gently and avoid curdling.

Next, stir in the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and continue cooking the sauce for one minute, stirring constantly. Then add the grated parmesan cheese and whisk the sauce until the cheese melts and the sauce is smooth and begins to thicken.

The Alfredo sauce is now ready to serve. Serve Alfredo sauce with your favorite pasta! You can either stir in the cooked pasta directly in the pan or pour the sauce over the pasta in a serving bowl. Mix well, serve immediately, and enjoy! I love to garnish it with some fresh parsley, too!
